Would you like to know more about the products at the top of the page? Here, you can learn everything you need to know about carrying HHC in your stores.

You’ll find out what HHC is, what forms it can be ordered in, how to market it to new customers, and how it’s legal. Then, you’ll get answers to the top questions (from customers and shopkeepers alike) about its effects and legality.

What is HHC?

HHC is a cannabinoid molecule that produces similar effects to your Delta 9 THC products. It’s separated from the plant using hydrogenation, creating a cannabinoid as effective as Delta 9 THC.

This product has the potential to be the most marketable new cannabinoid since CBD.

Chemically, HHC is the margarine to THC’s butter. It’s a hydrogenated form of THC made only from hemp with less than 0.3% THC by weight. It occurs naturally in cannabis pollen, but in such small amounts that to be a commercially viable product, it has to be manufactured.

In some writing, you’ll see HHC referred to as “semi-synthetic,” and that’s because it does exist in nature, but what you’re selling is made in a lab.

Now that you know what HHC is, you should know that there’s an entire world of HHC products out there that you can sell.

How is HHC Sold?

Despite being relatively new to the market, HHC has already begun to appear in several forms. Each of them appeals to different tastes and offers a different experience to your customers.

HHC Vapes

HHC is available in the popular form of vapes. We supply businesses with both disposable vapes and vape cartridges that use HHC.

There are some important differences between HHC disposable vapes and HHC disposable cartridges.

When a product is referred to as a “disposable vape,” it is a one-piece construction that includes a battery and cartridge fused into one product. However, when it is referred to as a “disposable cartridge”, it is just the vaping material in a cartridge without the battery.

Like most vapes, these are available in a variety of appealing flavors.

HHC Gummies

Gummies are one of the most popular forms of edibles, and they are already available with HHC.

The effects of edible HHC are often compared to those of edible delta-9 cannabis. In both cases, digestion rather than inhalation can amplify the effects while making them take longer to set in.

The gummies are available in an expanding assortment of juicy flavors. Many gummies are sold with CBD, CBN, CBG, and other cannabinoids to create a full-spectrum effect.

HHC Distillate Syringes

Your customers who prefer to use custom devices and rigs may appreciate that you carry HHC distillate syringes. Distillates are a type of concentrate, and syringes make them very easy to apply where they are most wanted.

Right out of the packaging, your customers can use the pre-filled syringes to prepare a dab rig or add some extra kick to any hemp flower they’re about to light up.

Distillates are flavored with natural terpenes that provide a traditional cannabis scent and taste.  You will typically see flavors like Northern Lights and Sunset Gelato. Check back regularly for the latest flavors.

We’re still experimenting with the best ways of bringing HHC to your customers. Upcoming products may include HHC flowers, pre-rolls, tinctures, and other forms

The variety of different forms can make it easy to promote these products to your existing base of customers. Next, you’ll learn what you need to know about marketing HHC in stores.

Marketing HHC to customers

You may be wondering how to have customers buy HHC bulk, especially if you also haveCBD, THC-O and Delta 8 products at your retail location.

With HHC’s close similarity to Delta 9 THC, you can sell it as a legal alternative to marijuana. It’s a hemp-derived product that contains less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by weight.

This may make it a good choice for customers who want to cut back on normal cannabis or want something a little lighter once they’re out of their 20s. To understand the appeal, it may help to consider all the types of people who typically buy HHC.

Who is buying HHC products?

Anecdotal reports from customers seem to suggest that the following shop visitors are likely to consider trying HHC when it is made available for them:

  • Cannabinoid enthusiasts who like to try all new products
  • CBD users who are curious about stronger effects
  • Delta-8 users who want to experiment with stronger effects
  • THC-O users who are looking for slightly mellower effects

To understand what customers are best served by this product, it may help to understand what they feel when they first use HHC.

What Will Customers Feel from HHC?

HHC is known to affect people who try it in different ways. However, there is some consistency in the anecdotal reports about the feelings involved.

In anecdotes from people who have experience with many cannabinoids, HHC is described as the closest to THC in terms of the psychoactive experience. However, in relation to its sister cannabinoids, it’s more potent than Delta 8 THC and doesn’t have the knock-down punch that THC-O boasts.

If you have a display of your Delta 8 and THC-O products, you can put HHC products in between the two. Delta 8 is great for those new to cannabinoids and who want to experience a milder sensation without a head high. HHC is a step up — very similar to Delta 9 THC in that it has both a body buzz and a head high. THC-O is for those who want to turn that high up to 11.

Framing these products to your customers in that way will generate sales and build trust and repeat business.

All of the following effects are possible on first-time, or subsequent use—

  • Feelings of euphoria: Users have reported that HHC brings on a calm sort of happiness. It may fall in between the traditional effects of indica and sativa, because it does not provide an energetic euphoria like sativa, but also isn’t associated with the sedating brain fog of indicas.
  • Relaxation: Users have said that HHC gives them a feeling of relaxation. This feeling has been compared to the one that users of delta-9 THC might experience when taking smaller doses.
  • Mild Physical Effects: Some users reported experiencing mild physical effects such as general warmth and pleasant tingling sensations.

Questions customers ask about HHC

HHC is a completely new product to many of your customers, and they may have questions about how it works and how it compares to other related products they may have tried. Here are some of the most common customer questions and answers you can give them.

Your customers may ask you if HHC shows up on drug tests. It’s true that this is a newer cannabinoid, and it’s not easy to find tests that directly detect HHC. However, this doesn’t mean that HHC can fool a drug test.

Drug tests by different manufacturers use different methods, but many popular tests detect a broad range of cannabis-related chemicals. Hemp chemicals that aren’t even involved in effects can still be detected and used as evidence to confirm “cannabis use” generally.

So, yes, it’s possible that the test won’t detect HHC. However, it’s also possible that the test won’t need to detect it. The presence of any related chemicals may also result in failing the drug test.

HHC will usually leave the body within 30 days. As with Delta-9 THC, long-term use will make it linger in the body longer.

HHC has been reported to have milder but comparable effects to cannabis. These include psychoactive effects, such as euphoria, mood alteration, and changes in awareness.

Anecdotal reports from customers have suggested that HHC generally has stronger psychoactive effects than Delta 8. It is reportedly less psychoactive compared to normal cannabis.

HHC is rarely reported to have strong psychedelic effects like those reported when high amounts of THC are taken. The effects of HHC tend to be weighted toward physical relaxation.

HHC is not reported to be stronger than THC-O. Many customers who have tried both have anecdotally claimed that THC-O is significantly stronger. THC-O is considered to be stronger than normal THC.

Users generally report that HHC has stronger effects than CBD. One important difference is that HHC has a mild psychoactive effect, whereas CBD does not.

Both HHC and CBD are reportedly good for relaxation.

HHC is a naturally-occurring cannabinoid. However, it is only available in nature in very small amounts. The HHC you can purchase in stores is synthesized from THC by a machine process.

Whether HHC feels more like a sativa or indica may be a matter of opinion. What many people have reported can be described as the effects of a light indica. It is calming and relaxing rather than energetic, but it rarely causes the “couch lock” feeling reported with strong indicas.

HHC products that are compliant with federal law can be legally carried past TSA checkpoints and onto airplanes. However, depending on the form of your HHC, you may come up against other TSA rules.

Solid HHC edibles are some of the easiest items to bring past checkpoints. They can be carried in your checked or carried-on luggage. They will need to be inspected for carry-on, but the agent should return them when they are confirmed to be compliant.

Any HHC-infused drinks will be subject to strict liquid limits, so they generally cannot be carried past TSA unless they are in very small bottles (3.4 ounces or less).

HHC Vapes are subject to different rules. Vapes cannot be placed in checked luggage because of the fire risk associated with batteries. You can bring vapes in your carry-on luggage.

Vape material may be considered “liquids or gels” under TSA rules. Most disposable vapes and cartridges carry 2 grams or less of this material, so they are at no risk of reaching the liquid limit.

HHC Distillate should be safe in carry-on luggage as long as the container does not exceed the liquid/gel limits.

Many of your customers will have no prior experience with HHC due to how recently it arrived on the market. They may have some questions about how they should approach their first use.

As HHC is reported by some customers to be nearly as strong as cannabis, everyone should exercise caution when trying it for the first time.

  • For vape devices: start with a single puff and wait at least one hour to see the effects. Experiment slowly with longer puffs as you start to understand the effects.
  • For edibles: Take small doses of HHC edibles. You can start with one small gummy, and our HHC edibles can be cut into halves or quarters to meet the needs of new and adjusting users. Remember that edibles may take a long time to take effect. You should wait at least two hours after your first dose to see how it affects you.
  • For distillate (concentrate): start with one drop of distillate on flowers or your favorite foods and drinks.

The effects of HHC can last anywhere from 2-8 hours, depending on the form you prefer.

If your experience is like other customers, you may feel the effects of vapes within half an hour, and then feel the effects fade away within the first two hours.

Edibles are more likely to affect you for between 2-8 hours. Unmeasurable personal factors such as body weight, tolerance, and mood will always play a role in how long the effects of HHC last.

Anyone who is pregnant, nursing, or managing conditions with medication should avoid all cannabinoids before speaking to a doctor. HHC is no exception.

Discerning clients want to know: Is HHC Safe? At The Hemp Doctor, we always provide Heavy Metal lab testing and certificates of analysis for all of our products — and HHC is no different.

So if your customers ask whether HHC is safe, please print off the third-party tested COA and heavy metal analysis and have them available for your clients to view.

HHC is federally legal as long as it is synthesized from THC collected from compliant hemp plants. That’s a bit of a mouthful, so here’s a little more context…

First, hemp plants were removed from the controlled substances list by the 2018 Farm Bill. Hemp and hemp products are now considered federally legal if they contain less than 0.03% THC. Cannabis plants remain fully illegal at the federal level.

THC is only one of the cannabinoids in hemp plants associated with physical and mental effects. Pioneers quickly discovered that other cannabinoids, such as CBD and Delta-8, could be produced from hemp plants that were legal under the law.

Unlike THC, none of these hemp-derived cannabinoids have federal limits imposed on them. Cannabis-sourced CBD is still illegal federally, but hemp-sourced CBD is not.

HHC exists in a slightly grayer area of the law than some cannabinoids because it is semi-synthetic. Like Delta-8, it sometimes needs to be produced from excess THC. HHC turns this THC into a different form.

This is understood to be legal at this time, and HHC products are being sold nationwide. Future legislation or rulings may clarify these rules further.

States have the power to regulate some substances within their own border. Your state may ban HHC even though it is not illegal federally. You should consult with state resources or an attorney to determine if your business can legally carry HHC.

Yes, HHC products are treated as federally legal for the time being. Both the hemp plants used for extracting the HHC and the final products that contain the HHC must be below the federal limits for THC.

HHC produced from hemp has been treated as legal since 2018. Its federally legal status has not been reinterpreted since that time.  Various states within the US have acted to make HHC or other cannabinoids illegal.

Hemp-derived products that comply with the 2018 Farm Bill can be legally shipped across the U.S. without violating federal law, as it is understood. Some HHC products may not be legal in some states (more information on that in an upcoming question).

This should make shipping relatively simple for edibles and distillates.

Some important exceptions in shipping regulations may make it more difficult for you to ship HHC vapes and HHC vape cartridges. USPS and other carrier rules prevent the shipping of vapes to individuals unless they meet certain conditions.

Vape packages may require you to verify that the customer is at least 18 or 21 years of age. Carriers will confirm this with a paid signature service.

HHC sourced from cannabis is banned in any state that also bans THC. Though federally legal, HHC may be banned in the following states:

  • Alaska: HHC is possibly illegal here as THC compounds are illegal from any source
  • Arizona: All psychoactive cannabinoids are banned in this state.
  • Colorado: Modifying cannabinoids is illegal here. The source does not matter
  • Delaware: HHC is possibly illegal here as psychoactive compounds from the entire cannabis genus are illegal
  • Idaho: All hemp extracts are banned in this state
  • Maryland: HHC is possibly illegal here as psychoactive cannabinoids are banned regardless of source
  • New York: This state has been rapid to ban Delta-8 and Delta-10. It may act soon to ban HHC
  • Rhode Island: This state bans one of the typical extraction processes for HHC

Remember that the laws involving HHC and cannabinoids are changing fast, and your state may have recently passed new laws. None of these explanations should be considered legal advice. Always speak to a lawyer or contact your state government to find out what you can legally carry.
